I think with a post like this people don’t want to waste time reading stuff so I’m going to be quick then put the data, I’ll put my thoughts on it afterwards. Below is a table showing the data collected by looking at the last 20 games played by each of the top players on the EUW, NA and KR servers. I looked at the tier average for each of those 20 games and recorded the frequency split by server.

I also took the amount of time each player took to play their last 20 games and averaged it to get a value for roughly how many games the top players on each server are playing a day. So even to someone who doesn’t know what this means I think it’s fairly obvious that the numbers for Europe look very different to the relatively similar stats for Korea and North America.

I think to most people on this subreddit however the table should be fairly self explanatory. The only misunderstanding I could see happening is that these numbers do not reflect the actual number of games happening. For example the 4 data points for European challenger MMR games does not equal 4 different games. In fact 3 of those data points are from the same game. Which means there are only 2 games I could find which could reasonably be called a Challenger MMR game.

You can take a look at them here. I actually tweeted some stats like this recently and one of the main counterpoints I got was “maybe because everyone is scrimming all the time in Europe there are actually just less chance for higher MMR games to happen”. Even if this were true I think the disparity between EUW and the other two servers should not be this large based off just that factor alone.

This ostensibly makes it difficult for skilled players to “climb” up the matchmaking ranking and out of Elo hell , due to the difficulty of consistently winning games under these conditions. Its existence in various games has been debated, and some game developers have called it an illusion caused by cognitive bias. The term was coined based on the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo , which was initially used for chess games but began to be used in video games as well.

Elo rankings have also been “abused” by players who create parties of their friends in order to “escape” Elo hell. Elo hell has also been noted as existing outside of video games, such as in the matchmaking app Tinder , which also uses a variant of the Elo rating system. Supposing that one is in Elo hell has been known to cause frustration and video game rage.

This has caused games that use the Elo system to be noted as some of the most “toxic” games to play. Esports players of competitive games have recommended that players who are “stuck in Elo hell” “take every game seriously” and focus on winning at all costs. Riot Games claimed in a update to the matchmaking FAQ of League of Legends that Elo hell did not exist, citing the Dunning-Kruger effect and negativity bias from their worst experiences with the game as reasons why players believe the system is “imbalanced”.

Experiments conducted by two Dota 2 players appeared to conclude that Elo hell did not exist in that game in a significant way, as an experienced player was able to raise their rank merely by playing well and “carrying” their team.

Flex queue is causing matchmaking problems, players still wait on solo queue

Hey everyone, on the design side we are currently analyzing the ranking system top to bottom. Thanks to everyone for their feedback! Competitive matchmaking has been a source of resentment for many players of Riot’s tactical shooter since the mode’s release in late June. One of the main complaints, which many notable personalities have echoed, is that solo queue players are constantly being matched with teams who have all queued up together in a five-stack.

Apparently, Riot has been listening to the community’s feedback.

Riot Games’ League of Legends received a new patch. League of Legends Patch has an update to the matchmaking system. servers do have ups and downs, and sometimes it needs some maintenance work to fix it.

Since Position Select’s launch, players have complained they were getting their secondary choice or autofilling more often than getting their first choice. Riot has worked to fix that to the point where players get their first choice position about 90 percent of the time, according to the post. The time in champion select has gone down over the course of last year from about four and a half minutes to three and a half. That is thanks to changes such as the simultaneous draft picks. Queue times have been an infamous part of the League of Legends experience.

Back in , high MMR players experienced waits of upwards of 25 minutes. The implementation of autofill and bug fixes have dropped the times down again to a healthy five minute maximum on average. The Riot Support team has even more ambitious goals for their future, including trying to get queues down to 30 seconds for all players.

Rather than jumping into an ad hoc chatroom with four other players and hashing out what position and character everyone is going to play prior to a game, Team Builder allows you to just select the position, role, and character you want to play. The game then places you on a map thusly:. Ever since it was introduced in , League of Legends players have been supportive of Team Builder—if only in theory sometimes.

The feature promises to eliminate pretty much all of the pre-game tension caused by players vying for the same positions, which is a ubiquitous frustration in League. Most importantly of all, it takes a lot longer to join games with Team Builder. In April , we ran a low level Team Builder experiment where we only had Team Builder available for lower levels, and then turned off most of the other queues. Lin was responding to a player query about why League of Legends had suddenly stopped allowing anyone below level 25 to use Team Builder in some regions, which is why he mentions the April experiment and a specific level requirement in the above statement.

By his description, it sounds like Riot is aiming to simplify Team Builder by, say, reducing the amount of choices a player has to make pre-game. So rather than selection a position, role, and champion to play as, they could just select a position before being grouped together with their teammates.

Riot introduces LoL Client Cleanup Campaign to finally “fix the client”

After facing nearly an entire season of complaints, lead game play designer Mark “Scruffy” Yetter and designer Jonathan “IAmWalrus” Moormann responded to high elo players’ concerns with matchmaking fairness. Scruffy and IAmWalrus didn’t disclose exactly what Riot is planning to do, but the general idea is that in exchange for longer queue times, matchmaking will be adjusted to group skilled players with teammates closer to their MMR. A change like this would likely be implemented closer to Preseason, since it could drastically affect those making the final push to reach their ranked goals at the end of Season Nine.

This would definitely help players who have been AFK for some time after pressing the queue button. Which in turn is causing longer queue time in the game for some players. And sometimes when the match finally starts, some players are usually AFK. It can sound like a small annoyance. But over the course of several matches in a day, it begins to really irritate players. In this case, the fix is really simple. Riot Games already has so much experience with online matchmaking with League, that is why it is so annoying to see these essential features missing from the game.

Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that had queued alone (or other premades of a similar total skill level) Riot Games Inc.

When Riot announced last year that they would be implementing positional matchmaking into the League of Legends ranked queues in Season 9, they were met with a mix of skepticism and couched optimism. While many immediately saw flaws and possible exploits that such a system could offer, others hoped that it would be a solution to the complaints of poor matchmaking that plagued Season 8.

Instead, we got the worst of both worlds. This season, there have been cries from pro players, high elo players, and coaches alike to do away with positional matchmaking and reset the ranked ladder. While some of these complaints and problems are due to problems with the early season LP gains which Riot has acknowledged , there are still a ton of valid complaints against the positional matchmaking system. Many high-elo and pro players have pointed out that some players have been using this system to easily boost teammates or duo partners by swapping lanes.

Essentially, players are abusing the match-making system to get matched against players in their main role who are much lower, MMR-wise, than they are to get easy LP. Duo Queue 2. Worse yet, if a player performs badly, there is the possibility that the player can go into another role, go AFK or keep feeding, without consequence. This is because the system will detect register your position based on the lane where you spend most of the time in your early game, and give you LP and MMR losses for that lane.

Riot is fighting a war against game latency. The banes of competitive online gaming are many, but the handful of principal offenders are easy to identify. Trolls, cheaters, matchmaking hiccups — these persistent gremlins are all here to ruin your day, and no solutions are completely effective at eradicating them.

In a fast-paced game like League of Legends, milliseconds matter, and minor lag can mean the difference between victory and defeat. First launched in and focusing on the North American player base, the initiative is now active in Europe and has already begun transforming the experience of players across the continent. By partnering with ISPs and installing specialised networking equipment, the company has created its own private channel on the digital freeway that transmits nothing but League of Legends data.

But essentially we want everyone to be on an equal bar. Anyone playing Blitzcrank, a champion dependent on grabbing fast-moving opponents, on a ms ping will attest to the difference a few milliseconds makes. This handicap undermines the fundamental principles of fairness and balance that companies like Riot have strived toward for so long. The unpredictable nature of internet latency interferes with the idea of balanced matchmaking: players are periodically prevented from performing at their best, leading to unfair losses, or undeserving wins.

To tackle the beast, you must understand its nature, and Teel is an expert on the random nature of internet responsiveness. There can be quite a lot of points, or routers as we like to call them, before the traffic from your computer actually reaches our servers. Ivo Teel. For games the problem of latency is particularly pronounced as they have very different demands to other online media.
